In addition to allowing you to control the robot using a smartphone or remote as well, the iRobot Genius app makes it easy to configure the j7+, create an agenda, and fine-tune other settings. The j7+ has an extra-large dust bin than the other self-emptying robot vacuums we've tested. The ION XL robot vacuum is one of the most flexible available. It can clean carpets as well as hard floors. You can control the robot through an app or voice commands. You can also create a map to clean your home on demand. The robot does great job moving around furniture and can even traverse stairs and rooms that are fully carpeted effortlessly.
I tried the ION XL in a family and kitchen room with hardwood flooring, area rugs, and a standard debris test. It did a great job vacuuming, clearing debris and pet hair from the floors, and also picked up some of the more stubborn crumbs on carpets. It also did a great job at getting around my barstools and did not bump into them as the iRobot J7+ did in this test. The only downside is that the IONXL cannot detect toys, cords and shoes that may be in its path which means you'll have prepare your home for cleaning prior to running this robot vacuum if you want it to avoid these items.
The ION XL is not as efficient as the iRobot j7+, but it is an excellent alternative if you don't want to spend more than $500 for an automated cleaner. It's better than the RoboVac 11S, in many ways. It's simpler to maintain and has lower recurring costs. It is also better at cleaning floors with no carpet and picking up pet fur, but not as effective on carpets with a low or higher-pile carpet.
It's not as robust however it's a solid option. The ION XL has a large bin capacity, it can be controlled with an app and voice command, and it is simple to keep up with routine maintenance. It's also a good price.
